What can I buy?

Here is a selection of the range of goods and the suppliers you can find at the store listed by section. This is not exhaustive - we are constantly adding to our stock and sourcing new producers - and stock can vary from week to week, but you can get a good feel for our regular range below:

FRUIT & VEGETABLES

We work closely with Shillingford Organics, a family farm located on the outskirts of Exeter, near the village of Shillingford Abbot 3 miles to the West of the store. Shillingford Organics supply most of our freshly picked vegetables on a daily basis. They are a team of committed and passionate organic growers- growing over 75 different types of vegetables and herbs organically since 2000.

  • Seasonal fruit & veg mostly supplied by Shillingford Organics, 3 miles West of Exeter.
  • Riverford Organics complement our range of fruit & veg (Riverford, Wash Farm, one of the pioneering veg box schemes & 25 miles west of the store near Totnes)
  • Oyster mushrooms from Exeter Urban Farm, grown using our own coffee grounds
  • We also stock depending on the season: frozen soft fruit from Boyces, sprouted pulses & seeds from Skysprouts near Totnes, vegetables from Exeter Community Growers near Shillingford St George, with apples also supplied by a number of local orchards.

Where certain vegetables are not available within the immediate locality at certain times of year e.g. onions or mushrooms, then we purchase organically from the nearest supplier (e.g. Riverford, or Let's Go Organic). The tomato is an example of fresh produce considered a staple that we aim to supply year round; we will sell Shillingford’s own grown tomatoes when in season & supply Organic tomatoes usually from Spain via Riverford when local ones are not available.

    DAIRY PRODUCE & EGGS:

    MILK & CREAM

    • Organic, pasturised non-homogenised whole & semi-skimmed milk from Riverford Dairy. Also double cream, clotted cream and crème fraiche.
    • Semi-skimmed and Whole organic milk from Ashclyst Farm Dairy, on the Killerton Estate

    At the Real Food Store we sell milk that is non-homogenised so the cream rises to the top just like it used to! You have the choice of using the cream or giving the milk a good shake first. The fat content in milk will vary according to many factors such as quality of the grass at different times of year. You will taste the difference with both of these high quality milks.     BUTTER

    • Organic lightly salted and unsalted butter and from Brue Valley in Somerset; Salted from Maryland

    YOGURT

    • Natural yogurt whole milk or fat free from Riverford Dairy (organic with live culture)
    • Fruit and natural yogurts in large pots from Ashclyst Farm Dairy.
    • Fruit and natural yogurts in small pots from Langage Farm

    CHEESE
    Devon is fortunate to have a number of artisan cheese makers who have been reviving traditional cheese making- successfully and to great acclaim. At the RFS we have a range that includes:

    ICE CREAM
    Delicious Devon made ice creams & sorbets from Salcombe Dairy (large and individual tub sizes). All ice creams come in a range of delicious flavours. We also stock a dairy free, gluten free & wheat free ices from Booja Booja.

    EGGS
    Our aim is to provide the versatile staple egg from sustainable sources at an excellent price that is good for the producer and at a price either well under supermarket prices (Free Range) or comparable (Organic).

    • Free-range eggs from Coakley’s, Aylesbeare approx 5 miles East of Exeter.
    • Organic eggs from Shillingford Organics & Laydilay
    • We also sell delicious organic mayonnaise and meringues from Laydilay organic farm, near Ashburton.
    • Quails eggs from Little Bowhay, Shillingford Abbot

    MEAT & FISH

    We offer a good range of local sourced, sustainably reared and high quality meat from farmers and producers mostly working within 20 miles of Exeter. Our organic meat is priced competitively.

    • Organic beef from West Town Farm near Ide.
    • Free range pork - Including bacon (cured & smoked), gammon, sausages and pork rounds from The Free Range Farmer near Sidmouth.
    • Pork & Beef - Sausages, burgers, ready meals using Piper's Farm produce, lamb steaks, braising and sirloin steak from Piper's Farm, just north of Exeter.
    • Sausages - pork sausages supplied by Free Range Farmer and speciality sausages including 'spicy Italian', 'pork and black pudding' and 'venison and pork', supplied by Good Game of Topsham.
    • Free Range Poultry - From Otter Valley in the Blackdown Hills including free-range whole chicken & packs of thighs and drumsticks.
    • Charcuterie -  Mixed charcuterie selection, air dried ham, and chorizo from Fine Country Lifestyle. Also chorizo and biltong from Good Game of Topsham
    • Smoked fish - Trout, salmon, salmon pate and prawns from Mike's Smokehouse in South Devon. Smoked salmon, mackeral and gravilax from Chesil Smokery in Dorset.  We also sell tinned pilchards from the Cornish Pilchard Company. 
    • Fresh fish - Lemon sole, guarnard, fresh and smoked pollock from Gibson's Plaice in Magdalen Road, Exeter.
    • Ready meals - We stock an ever changing selection of frozen meals from Pipers Farm, and also handmade meals from Ruth's Real Food, who also do a vegetarian range.

    • Organic dips: a range of houmous from Clive’s including classic, sun-dried tomato & lemon & coriander.
    • Pies and pasties including the famous award winning Chunks of Devon and the vegetarian range of Clives Pies (some are gluten free &/or vegan)

    • Ashridge Sparkling Vintage Cider, made using the traditional ‘methode champenoise’ producing a classy drink also available as ‘Devon Blush’ with with an added blackberry liqueur- Devon’s answer to the ‘kir royale’.

    We now stock a wide range of local beers including:

    Many of our larder goods are supplied by Essential, the Trading Cooperative based in Bristol. Other goods from a number of excellent local producer-suppliers, many of whom have wonderful links with communities in other countries e.g. ‘Tried and Tasted’ Olive oil from the Greek mainland. The range includes:

    Please note we are unable to produce gluten-free baked products in our on-site bakery. We are often asked about producing gluten-free bread, but as we produce all of our baked products using flour that naturally contains gluten, the risk of cross-contamination is too high.
