Dear Real Food Customers

We sadly announced last week that the store will be closing at the end of September. We want to wholeheartedly thank our members, customers, volunteers, suppliers, board, staff and friends for the support you have given this community owned business over the past ten years. We hope that our ethos and vision of easily accessible and affordable local food will have a lasting impact on the community. We also hope that something will continue to grow from what we have achieved and set out to do.

We are planning to close our doors at the end of September. We could do with all your support up until that date, so please continue to shop with us in the coming weeks.

Please continue to support the local suppliers we stock in any way that you can. We will be sharing a list of alternative places you can find much loved products over the next few weeks.

We are finding ways to celebrate our successes over the past ten years of trading, so please keep an eye out for this.

With thanks,
The Real Food Store Team
Rob, Summer, Laura, Will, Aslihan, Abbi and Izzy

A letter from the board of directors about the decision to close:

Is it true that the shop is going to close?

Yes. We have reluctantly taken the decision to close the business. We want you to hear this from us.

Why is the Real Food Store closing?

We have weathered a few storms in the 10 years since we first started trading. We are proud of our record in bringing local produce to the city centre providing you with an alternative to the national chains.

But pride is not enough to sustain our business through the unprecedented challenges and changes we have faced over the past 18 months.

We reopened the shop in June 2020, following a period of nine weeks closure. During that time we redesigned the store layout, increased safety measures to protect staff and customers, and made other changes aimed at improving our offer to you.

We set modest financial targets that we believed were achievable. We did not expect trade to return to normal quickly and have patiently overseen the shop’s performance, constantly thinking about ways of driving up sales, while keeping our costs down.

Sadly, takings never got close to the level we needed to breakeven, let alone to have a little surplus to enable us to rebuild our severely depleted finances.

Can I help?

The best way to help us - and the local producers whose goods we stock - is to carry on shopping here until we close the doors.

We want you to be able to shop with confidence that the fullest range of fresh local produce will continue to be available throughout the weeks to come.

Is there a closing date?

We are planning to carry on until the end of September, giving the staff team time to find other work, and giving notice to the many small producers whose goods we stock to find alternative outlets.

If trading conditions change we reserve the right to close sooner. We do not anticipate having to do that, and certainly not without providing you with advance warning.

Thank you for your support in the past and your understanding over the weeks to come. As we identify alternative outlets for your favourite bread, vegetables, dairy produce and other items we shall post news in the store.
