Double Elephant linocut printmakers and Real Food Store favourites Cathy King and Jeremy Speck feature in our latest exhibition, a selection of work focussed on subjects as diverse as geometric abstraction, local Devon landscapes and still life. These striking linocut prints are bold in line and colour, a celebration of shape and composition. With Christmas creeping up on us yet again, it's time to start thinking about gift ideas. We think these stunning prints may just be the ticket for that someone very special.
Cathy King works across a range of print medium focusing on linocut, both reduction and multi block, occasionally layering with screenprint. The images used in her linocuts employ the use of strong defined lines and bold shapes to produce simple yet colourful semi-abstract and figurative representations. Cathy is inspired by the natural and urban landscape in and around Devon and the work of artists such as Robert Tavener, Edward Bawden and the Grosvenor School of Art.
The work of Jeremy Speck ranges from graphic imagery inspired by artists as diverse as the German Expressionists and Eric Ravilious, through to geometric abstracts, where colours and shapes are overlaid to achieve a balanced and contemplative composition. Jeremy is also influenced by the St Ives School of artists including Ben Nicholson. His still-life compositions are a more relaxing aside to the abstract work as they involve a more traditional use of lino and cutting tools, but they still find their inspiration in contrasting shapes and textures.
